Welcome to the strange world of personal health, a moving target that everyone should be trying to hit. The goal of this website is to share my views and experiences as they relate to my journey of becoming a healthier human and just maybe create a healthy ripple in someone else.
Whether just starting out on your health and fitness journey, or you’re someone who has been immersed in the quest for a better you, we can always imagine new ways to improve. Even when we feel as though everything has been dialed in and worked out, we still search for an edge. As humans we tend to perceive the present as eternally lacking, while the future holds a forever greater promise. As time goes by, I tend to gravitate towards simplicity in nutrition, fitness, and life in general. It’s not that complexity is bad. Nature is both simple and complex, beautiful yet ruthless and destructive. The feeling is more holistic and less specific. Instead of focusing merely on weight lifted, grams of protein consumed, distance covered, routes climbed, calories eaten, six pack abs checked, etc., I look more through a lens of diminishing returns as it relates to my time and overall feeling. Seeking foresight into the future me helps guide my decision making. The risk to benefit ratios of lifting heavier weights, pushing the boundaries too often, and inadequate rest time are all moving to the forefront. As I will discuss in the body section, risk and randomness should not be totally avoided. You shouldn’t stay in your comfort zone all the time. You need discomfort. Society has done a great job turning the modern human into a fragile needy consumer. Our ancestors who survived unimaginable adversity, difficulty, and struggle would be appalled at what some have become with the modern trappings of life.
As we age there are certain truths that are unavoidable. Our bodies change and become less robust with the passing of time. We all experience disappointment in ourselves, make bad choices, and feel as though the mountain is too high. People hunger for a clear message about the determinants of success and failure in health, and they need to hear that the path is simple and easy, even when not. As we move to become healthier the process needs to be sound with a focus on quality over time and less about the outcome of individual markers. Weight loss for example could be achieved in a small window of time by using diet pills, crash diets, or prolonged fasting. The process we choose can contribute to sustainability of our new habits. Focusing on quality decision making and a sound process over outcomes alone.
After moving into my 40’s I wanted to design a website and share what I have learned over the years. Trying to tease out the details in my mental & physical practices to share in hopes it might help others. My physical carrier has had a good amount of variety without too much specialization. My focus has always been about performance and health with aesthetics being a result of the pursuit. My site is for all people looking to grow, train, compete, and explore all around fitness at any age.
What you’re reading is a collection of my thoughts. Some are based in science. Others are just my opinion. Nothing is set in stone as all things are subject to change in life.
